For many folks around the world, there is great concern regarding the thousands and thousands of barrels of oil still gushing into the Gulf. As a Florida resident and a world citizen, I encourage you to participate in World Oceans Day…
Please listen to this song called Good Medicine, which today, Brent and I offer as a dedication to the oceans of this great good earth...
And, here is prayer we can all join in on…
Father Sky and Mother Earth, we call to the hearts and souls of humanity to have compassion for your healing waters. We see every droplet of water as the Source of life for all creatures on the planet and know it is our responsibility to care for and honor the oceans and the species of living creatures and plants that are being impacted by this monumental disaster.
As a human race, we know the power we possess to come together in compassion, caring and shared responsibility. We know the brilliance of the scientific mind partnered with the loving soul can bring about great and positive change and we call forth, in this very moment, a shift in consciousness that enables us to co-create and implement strategies that provide long-term solutions to ensure clean waters and fuel alternatives that will shift the trajectory of both the planet and the entire human race.
We ask for the solutions to be made known and available and, that in setting aside political agendas and the tendency to seek blame, we are able to come together as a human race and begin the process of repairing the damage to the oceans, rivers and streams and all of their inhabitants.
We ask for innovative solutions, support, hope, and prosperity to be extended to the fisherman and all people's impacted by BP's lack of planning and response. We also ask for BP executives and the government to come together as one mind and one spirit with one common agenda...to stop the damage and clean the waters for the sake of all humanity.
We pray for greed, complacency, ignorance, hatred and deceit to be transcended so that together, regardless of agenda, faith, or industry, we funnel our energy towards to the good of all. As we are reminded by the indigenous of the world, water is the first medicine. We pray to and for the waters and oceans of the world so that they may experience the positive, loving impact of a global transformation in human consciousness that evolves beyond seeing the earth, her waters, and her creatures and plants as resources merely for the taking, and rather as treasures that we must protect and take care of, just as we would a small, innocent child.
We see a coming together of the greatest minds of the world in service to the healing of our waters and in doing so, we offer hope to the generations that come…

"Wear Blue and Tell Two" for World Oceans Day 2010
In 2009 The Ocean Project started an annual tradition associated with World Oceans Day. We launched "Wear Blue and Tell Two" as a new way of celebrating our world's ocean on June 8th.
The main idea behind "Wear Blue and Tell Two" is to have people associate the color blue with World Oceans Day each year. We also are interested in helping each person multiply their positive reach by telling friends or colleagues two interesting facts about the ocean or ways one can take take personal action to help.
We urge all our zoo, aquarium, and museum (ZAM) partners and other friends in the wider ocean conservation community to spread the word about Wear Blue and Tell Two as a fun and easy way to help make a difference!
To make the "tell two" part a little easier, here are two messages you can share:
- Our ocean has a great wealth of diverse kinds of life but it's in trouble. Climate change has already been linked to the killing of coral reefs. Coupled with destructive fishing practices, there is a dramatic decline in many types of fish and sea life we depend on.
- There are important, easy actions each of us can take to help. Calculating our carbon footprints and looking for ways to reduce our role in climate change is a great step. Likewise, we can choose seafood that is abundant in supply and fished or farmed without harm to the ocean and coasts.
You might want to consider, for instance:
- Providing carbon calculators, such as those at StopGlobalWarming.org, EPA, or Berkeley Institute of the Environment, on-site and linking online so visitors can learn more.
- Handing out sustainable seafood guides and cards on-site and linking online to programs such as Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch, Blue Ocean Institute, or Environmental Defense Fund's Seafood Selector.
To make the "wear blue" part even easier, here are two tools you should feel free to use:
- "Wear Blue" graphic file (444 KB EPS or 244 KB PDF file)&mdash this design may be something you'd like to use by dropping in your own logo for t-shirts, flyers, etc.
- Sample t-shirt design (PDF, 250 KB)&mdash this PDF shows an example of how you might consider using the graphic design, in this case a sample t-shirt with Monterey Bay Aquarium and National Aquarium's logos on back, and with The Ocean Project logo on front.
Thank you and remember to "Wear Blue and Tell Two" on June 8th!
As a result of a United Nations General Assembly resolution passed in December 2008, World Oceans Day is now officially recognized by the UN as June 8th each year.
The concept for a “World Ocean Day” was first proposed in 1992 by the Government of Canada at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, and it had been unofficially celebrated every year since then. Since 2002, The Ocean Project and the World Ocean Network have helped to promote and coordinate World Oceans Day events worldwide. We help coordinate events and activities with aquariums, zoos, museums, conservation organizations, universities, schools, and businesses. Each year an increasing number of countries and organizations have been marking June 8th as an opportunity to celebrate our world ocean and our personal connection to the sea.
Together, we also developed and widely circulated a petition to the United Nations urging them to officially recognize World Oceans Day. With help from our Partner organizations, tens of thousands of people from all parts of the world signed online or paper copies of the petition. Congratulations to all for helping to make this happen!
Designation of World Oceans Day provides an important boost to those organizations and individuals who have been deeply committed to ocean conservation. Official UN designation is another important step toward improving the health of our world's ocean.
Now we need to capitalize on this fresh momentum! We hope you will be involved in planning or participating in a World Oceans Day celebration near you!
Please visit the rest of the World Oceans Day website to list your event, get celebration ideas, access the media and outreach kit, and more.
Why Should I Celebrate World Oceans Day?

Take part in World Oceans Day events and activities this year and help protect our ocean for the future!
It's up to each one of us to help ensure that our ocean is protected and conserved for future generations. World Oceans Day allows us to:
