As I was traveling through Mexico last week I had the occasion to settle into my hotel room and watch a little T.V., hoping to unwind a bit. Plus, I am working on my Spanish speaking skills and it is great to learn by watching English shows with Spanish subtitles. Believe it or not I picked up quite a lot by catching a few shows here and there.
But...it seemed the main shows all seemed to depict the darker side of our culture. Sleazy, manipulative women, extra-marital affairs, and soap opera types of shows like 90210 and Melrose Place were the primary American shows on Mexican Television.
Is this how they form their opinions of us? Through soap opera re-runs and newscasts depicting us a war hungry, immoral world citizens?
Yet, even today, upon my return home, I was more conscious of the increase in reality t.v. shows. Manipulation, competition, duplicity, drama and violence seem to be in much higher demand than anything else.
Is this a reflection of our society? Anyone with a little background in economics knows that supply is a function of what we demand. Is this what we are demanding? Diversionary drama? Violence? Ruined marriages?
What is it that makes other people's dramatic lives so interesting to us? Movie stars and musicians inviting us into their bedrooms and living rooms to watch their screwed up lives? I mean who cares who is sleeping with Flava Flave or what former child star is in rehab now?
What's filling your head? What's the last thing you watch or listen to before settling down for sleep?
